The President of the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) Giancarlo Abete confessed that "there has been an important speeding up of the process" for Cesare Prandelli to take the Italy job.
This week Fiorentina officially confirmed that they had given the FIGC permission to talk to their coach.
"For now Marcello Lippi is still on the bench and we will go to the FIFA World Cup with him," Abete told Mediaset Premium.
"We have said that before June 8 we will have clarity on what happens after that tournament.
"Prandelli? It seems to me that in the last few days there has been an important speeding up of the process.
"I think we will be able to stand by our promised deadline. We are working towards this."
Prandelli is currently in North America on a brief end-of-season tour with Fiorentina.
Italy are set to travel to South Africa for the World Cup on June 8, while the qualification campaign for UEFA Euro 2012 begins in September.
