Serie B - Week 34: Weekend Review

Friday 9 April
Frosinone 2-0 Gallipoli
Both teams have been going through a crisis recently, but Frosinone took a strong step towards safety despite playing almost an hour with 10 men. The opener was pure route one football, as Santoruvo and Stellone knocked on a goal kick for Basso to score. Moments later a deflected Bocchetti effort was parried into the path of Stellone, although Troianiello got the final touch on the line. Despite the fact Giubilato saw red before half-time, Gallipoli barely caused any problems for the home side.

Salernitana 0-0 Padova
Salernitana end a run of four consecutive defeats, but are to all intents and purposes already in Lega Pro. Padova had the opportunity to win this game after 15 minutes when Bastrini’s handling offence prompted a penalty, but Iuliano saved Vantaggiato’s spot-kick. There were also chances for Dionisi, Soligo, Cesar and Pepe.

Saturday 10 April
Lecce 2-1 Torino
Lecce surge away at the top of the table as Di Michele scored against his former club to end Torino’s strong run of results in this promotion play-off. Di Michele moved to the Stadio Via del Mare in January and within 12 minutes had broken through by finalising a great solo effort from Marilungo, while another effort was ruled offside. Ogbonna brought down Corvia for a penalty that the striker also converted. Toro fought back with saves denying Loria’s header and Genevier, then in first half stoppages Gasbarroni was tripped for a Bianchi penalty. Di Michele again tested Sereni from distance and straight from the corner flag, but in the final minutes Bianchi’s angled drive flashed across the face of goal for what was so nearly the equaliser.

Albinoleffe 1-2 Cesena
Cesena earned a crucial away victory to keep them in second place. Giaccherini opened the scoring by meeting Schelotto's cross from the right, aided by some static defending from Albinoleffe. Previtali's free kick thumped the upright, but Malonga converted the penalty successfully when Giaccherini was brought down. Laner's header was too late to spark a comeback from the home side.

Modena 1-1 Sassuolo
The local derby ended in a draw at the Stadio Braglia and stopped Sassuolo from breaking away into second place on their own. Catellani's solo run and fierce strike from distance put Modena in front, but Martinetti's looping header secured a share of the spoils.

Triestina 0-1 Brescia
Brescia left it late in order to snatch all three points and stay in joint second place. Baiocco thought he had given the visitors the lead in the first half, but it was ruled offside. Eventually Triestina did capitulate to a header from substitute Kozak.

Grosseto 4-0 Vicenza
Grosseto surged into the top five with this comfortable victory over sorry Vicenza. Carobbio's free kick opened the rout early on, but it was in the second half that they really took control. Esposito pounced on a goalkeeping error to meet Carobbio's cross, then Ferri brought down D'Alessandro for a Pichlmann penalty. Finally Alfageme netted a fourth on Vitiello's long ball forward.

Cittadella 2-0 Ascoli
Cittadella continue their remarkable march towards a potential play-off place with a goal at the very start and end of this game. Ardemagni smashed an angled drive in after just four minutes and Bellazzini sealed the scoreline in stoppages when sent through by Volpe. In between those strikes, Dalla Bona, Ardemagni, Iunco and Teoldi threatened. Antenucci had a goal disallowed for a dubious offside position, but Cittadella extend their unbeaten run to nine rounds.

Reggina 1-1 Empoli
Reggina are still fighting to stave off relegation, although it was a good result against high-flying Empoli. The usual Eder broke the deadlock just before half-time thanks to a deflection off Adejo to commit his own goalkeeper. Stovini hauled back Lanzaro for Brienza to convert the equalising penalty.

Ancona 0-1 Crotone
Crotone remain on the fringes of the play-off race and are now just two points adrift of Ancona. Ginestra scored the only goal of the game after 12 minutes when allowed a free header on Morleo's cross from the left. The home side had the opportunity to draw level in first half stoppages when Mastronunzio was pushed over, but Concetti did brilliantly to palm Mastronunzio's penalty off the line. It was the first of many crucial saves from the goalkeeper, who also denied Surraco, Miramontes and Colacone to secure Crotone's sixth away win of the season.

Mantova 1-1 Piacenza
Mantova were unlucky to end this game without all three points. They were denied a penalty in the first half for a push on Caridi, but did get the spot-kick after 65 minutes. However, Piacenza snatched a late equaliser with Cani's volley from close range.
