[U17] Azzurrini learn World Cup fate

Italy's Under-17s have been placed in a group with traditional powerhouse South Korea for the FIFA Under-17 World Cup later this year.

FIFA U-17 World Cup 2009The group stage draw, which was made on Friday in the Nigerian capital Abuja, also sees Italy facing Algeria and Uruguay in Group F.

The Azzurrini qualified for the tournament, that takes place from 24 October to 15 November in the West African country, after reaching the semi-finals of the UEFA European Under-17 Championships in Germany last May.


Italy's first game in Nigeria will be on Monday 26 October when Algeria - runner-up in the African Under-17 Championships on home soil this year - are the opposition at the Ahmadou Bello Stadium in Kaduna, where they will play their second game against the 2008 Asian Under-16 Championship finalists South Korea three days later.

Pasquale Salerno's side will conclude the group stage when they face Uruguay, who finished third in this year's South American Under-17 Championship, at Kano's Sani Abacha Stadium on Sunday 1 November.

There are six groups of four teams altogether with the group winners and runners-up qualifying for the Round of 16. The four best third-placed sides will also qualify for the knockout stage.

Eight venues, in Abuja (Abuja Stadium), Bauchi (Abubarkar Tafawa Balewa Stadium), Calabar (U.J. Esuene Stadium), Enugu (Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium), Ijebu-Ode (Gateway Stadium), Kaduna (Ahmadou Bello Stadium), Kano (Sani Abacha Stadium) and Lagos (Teslim Balogun Stadium), will stage the competition's matches.

Hosts Nigeria, holders from 2007 in South Korea, will open the tournament against European champions Germany on Saturday 24 October in Abuja.
