[Coppa Italia] Night of second round upsets

The second round of the Coppa Italia produced several shock results as five Serie B clubs exited the competition at the hands of lower league opposition.

Lega Pro 1 outfit Spal came from a goal down to beat Albinoleffe 3-1 after extra time at the Stadio Paolo Mazza and set up a third round tie with Palermo.

Novara will meet Parma in the next round after surprising hosts Modena on penalties after a 2-2 draw, while Piacenza were beaten 3-1 on home soil by Verona.

Cremonese came out 2-1 winners at Vicenza and Lumezzane hammered a young Gallipoli team 6-0 as five third-tier clubs progressed to the third round.

The three clubs relegated from Serie A last season all qualified as Torino managed to squeeze through against Figline, Reggina eased past Arezzo, and Lecce thumped the only remaining Lega Pro 2 club Vico Equense.

Elsewhere in the second round, Frosinone needed a late equaliser and penalties to get past Varese, Salernitana's win at Benevento on Saturday sets up a third round tie with local rivals Napoli, and Grosseto set up a Tuscan derby with Siena after coming out on top in an entertaining clash with Cosenza on Monday night.

The first batch of Serie A clubs enter the fray in the third round next weekend, while the remaining eight top-flight sides open their cup quest in the fifth round, in November and December.

All matches, except for the semi-finals, will be decided by one match including the final which will take place on May 5, 2010.
