The surprise deal was completed late on Tuesday night but financial details were not disclosed.However, press speculation in both Austria and Italy suggested that Napoli were to pay around 5million euros.
"Erwin Hoffer is a player of Napoli," read a statement on Napoli's official website. "The striker, who arrives from Rapid Vienna, has signed a five-year contract."
The 22-year-old Hoffer has been with Rapid for three seasons, scoring 44 goals in 95 matches.
He has played 11 international games and scored twice for Austria.
