An away goal earned Hamburg a 1-0 win in their all-German UEFA Cup semi-final first leg against Werder Bremen while Shakhtar Donetsk came away the happier from the all-Ukrainian tie after grabbing a vital away goal in a 1-1 draw at Dynamo Kiev.
Piotr Trochowski rose at the far post in the first half to head Hamburg in front ahead of next week's second leg. Bremen, who knocked out Udinese in the last round, pressed for an equaliser as the game wore on but could not break the away defence.
In Ukraine, Dynamo Kiev took a first half lead when Olexandr Aliev's free-kick was deflected off Chygrynskiy into his own net. But the home side were made to pay for wastefulness when Shakhtar grabbed a precious away goal thanks to Brazilian striker Fernandinho.
