Lecce sack Beretta and appoint De Canio

Second-from-bottom Lecce have sacked coach Mario Beretta and handed Luigi De Canio the challenge of keeping the team in Serie A.

Four successive defeats were followed by Sunday's 0-0 home draw with rock-bottom Reggina, which proved to be the final straw for the club's board.

"Lecce announces Mario Beretta has been relieved of the position of coach," a statement on Lecce's official website read. "Luigi De Canio is the new first team coach."

De Canio's former clubs include Udinese, Napoli, Reggina, Genoa and Siena. His most recent job was as coach of English second tier outfit Queens Park Rangers.

The Salentini, who are one point from safety with 11 games to go, travel to Palermo on Sunday.
