Inter defender Cristian Chivu faces a spell on the sidelines after tearing ligaments in his left knee during the 3-2 Serie A win at Reggina on Saturday.
The 28-year-old Romania defender was forced out after 74 minutes of the game in Reggio Calabria and underwent tests today.
"He will undergo conservative therapy instead of surgery, and will begin a rehabilitation programme in the coming days," read a statement on Inter's website.
Chivu has played six games in Serie A and one in the UEFA Champions League this season, and coach Jose Mourinho said: "It's a pity because we had found a certain stability in defence but now I will have to find an alternative option."
Mourinho has also excluded striker Adriano from the squad to go to Cyprus to face Anorthosis Famagusta on Tuesday after the Brazilian turned up late to training last Monday and was also left out of the subsequent the Serie A games against Fiorentina and Reggina.
