Juventus centre back Giorgio Chiellini was ruled out of Italy's midweek friendly with Austria after suffering a knee injury in a 4-1 defeat at AC Milan in the Berlusconi Trophy this evening.
Chiellini went off on a stretcher in the first half and Juve said in a statement he would not join up with Marcello Lippi's Italy squad for Wednesday's game in Nice. Lippi has already called up his club-mate Nicola Legrottaglie in his stead.
"It's very painful right now but we will see the results of tomorrow's tests," he said. "I hope the ligaments are not damaged."
It was a bad night all round for Juve, who had the better early chances before Milan put a woeful pre-season behind them.
The home side scored from a swerving effort by Marek Jankulovski, Massimo Ambrosini's header from a Clarence Seedorf cross and a close-range finish from Filippo Inzaghi to go 3-0 up before reserve Cristian Pasquato netted for Juve.
Ambrosini grabbed Milan's fourth 11 minutes from time.
The annual San Siro friendly is played in honour of Luigi Berlusconi, father of Milan owner and Italian Prime Minister Silvio.
Before the match, the club owner laughed off speculation he had held a meeting with Chelsea counterpart Roman Abramovich over the sale of Brazil playmaker Ricardo Kaka.
"Who is Abramovich?" Berlusconi joked to reporters.
Milan chief executive Adriano Galliani said they wanted Chelsea defender Branislav Ivanovic but added that the English Premier League side were not interested in a deal.
Serie A champions Inter face Coppa Italia holders Roma in the SuperCoppa final at the San Siro next Sunday before the Serie A season starts the following weekend.
