Totti staring at lengthy absence

Roma captain Francesco Totti will sit out the rest of the season after suffering cruciate ligament damage in his right knee during today's 1-1 Serie A draw at home against Livorno.

The 31-year-old forward was carried off after 39 minutes of the game at the Stadio Olimpico.

Totti was immediately taken to hospital where a scan confirmed the extent of his injury. Initial reports suggest he could be absent for as long as six months and he is also expected to require surgery, possibly even this weekend.

The capital club's talisman fired 14 goals in 24 league appearances this term to help his team put pressure on leaders Inter.

The draw with basement outfit Livorno has seriously dented their title chances, though, with Inter now hoping to increase their three-point advantage at Torino on Sunday night.
