LAST UPDATED ON 16-06-08: Serie D is the highest non-professional League in Italy. Ranking below Serie C2 (the 4th and last professional league), Serie D is considered the 5th ranked league in Italian football.
Serie D consists of 162 teams split into 9 regional divisions (Girone), usually formed of 18 teams each. Only the champions of each division are promoted to Serie C2 each year, replacing the 9 teams that are relegated from Serie C2.
The nine division winners then enter an end-of-season tournament to determine the overall Serie D champion and is awarded the Scudetto.
Four teams from each division are relegated each year to the Eccellenza, a regional amateur league below Serie D. The 2 bottom teams are relegated automatically, while teams ranked from 13th to 16th play a two-legged play-out, with the two losers relegated as well.
Teams placed second through fifth in each division enter the 36-team national play-off tournament at the end of the season. Eventually the teams that reach the latter stages may be bumped up to Serie C2 if one or more teams run into financial difficulties or are penalised.
That was a little background as to how Italy's fifth division works. Now check out the latest news on the 2007-08 promotion race and relegation fight by reading the rest of the post:
