Serie B Week 32: Review

Friday 21 March
Bologna 2-1 Frosinone
Bologna hold on to the joint leadership of Serie B, but made hard work of Frosinone. Marazzina and Valiani’s lob made it seem as if this was going to be a whitewash, but Giubilato accidentally turned into his own net and there were some scares at the Stadio Dall’Ara.

Chievo 1-0 Piacenza
Chievo managed to end Piacenza’s giant-killing spree, but it was far from a simple task. Having beaten Bologna and Pisa in their last two games, Piace had their chances at the Bentegodi too, but Maldonado’s header decided the match.

Mantova 0-1 Albinoleffe
Albinoleffe gave their incredible campaign another huge boost with this late victory away to a Mantova side that has now given up on a play-off place. It was also a local derby and Mantova had the better of the play overall, but fell to a fortunate Ruopolo strike.

Lecce 2-0 Rimini
Lecce stalled Rimini’s play-off candidacy and maintained their own race for the top flight. Zanchetta curled in one of his trademark free kicks and Corvia put the result beyond doubt. It was the home side’s first win in four rounds.

Pisa 0-0 Grosseto
The Tuscan derby failed to find a breakthrough under the pouring rain and it’s quite a success for relegation battlers Grosseto. Not only did they hold out away to high-flying local rivals Pisa, but they did so even when a man down for 20 minutes. Gabionetta followed Consonni off the field and Pisa have now gone four games without a win.

Triestina 1-0 Brescia
Brescia crumbled at the Nereo Rocco after injuries and suspension took their toll. Allegretti turned a set-piece into the net to secure a fourth straight victory for Triestina.

Messina 1-2 Bari
Bari are closer than ever to safety after a dramatic finale in Sicily. Bonanni’s free kick had given the visitors the lead and Moto thought he’d secured a point for Messina, but with practically the last kick of the game Lanzafame snatched the full bounty.

Cesena 1-1 Ascoli
Cesena left it very late to get a point out of this game. Bernacci had netted against his former club, but deep into stoppages Moscardelli denied Ascoli a victory.

Avellino 1-1 Modena
Alessandro Calori continued his strong start on the Avellino bench with a third positive result on the trot. Modena had gone in front through Pinardi, but an acrobatic Mengoni attempt got the Irpini on level terms. The Canarini held on despite Bastrini’s dismissal 17 minutes from time.

Spezia 1-1 Vicenza
Spezia are clinging on to Serie B for dear life and prevented Vicenza from breaking away, as Eliakwu’s spot-kick cancelled out an earlier Capone left-foot screamer.

Treviso 1-1 Ravenna
Treviso lost another opportunity to get themselves out of the relegation dogfight. Barreto had put things on the right track and a save on Sforzini’s penalty seemed to overcome the stumbling block, but Sforzini got his goal eventually to give Ravenna a point.
