Cuper appointed as Parma coach

Parma have confirmed that Hector Cuper will be their new coach.

The Argentine tactician has agreed a deal until the end of the season as he looks to try and help keep the Gialloblu in Serie A.

President Tommaso Ghiradi axed coach Domenico Di Carlo on Monday and he has wasted little time in finding his replacement.

"I need time to get to know the team," said Cuper.

"In any case I can say that in the 11 games we have remaining we will do everything to remain in Italy's top flight.

"I am certain we will defend our Serie A status."

Cuper has signed a short-term contract until the end of the season with the option of a longer deal should Parma avoid the drop.

The club are currently fourth from bottom in Serie A following the 2-1 home defeat to Sampdoria last Sunday.

The 52-year-old has experience of working in Italy after a spell in charge of Internazionale. He is currently without a club after being sacked by Spanish side Real Betis in December.

His first game in charge will be in Leghorn against Livorno on Sunday afternoon.

Parma were in a similarly perilous position last season and turned to Claudio Ranieri to get them out of trouble. Ranieri then left to join Juventus last summer.
