Azzurri: Semioli pulls out

Franco Semioli has pulled out of Italy’s friendly match with Portugal due to an injury.

The Fiorentina winger had been included in the 20-man list released by coach Roberto Donadoni on Sunday.

However, he sustained a sprain to his foot that kept him out of last night’s 1-0 defeat to AC Milan and the same injury won’t allow him to recover for international duty.

It was Semioli’s seventh call-up for the Azzurri, though to date he has only earned three caps.

The Azzurri take on Portugal next Wednesday and Donadoni will decide whether to call in another name or stick with the 19 remaining players after meeting the squad in Milan today.

Meanwhile, injuries have ruled Empoli starlet Sebastian Giovinco and Siena's Daniele Galloppa out of Italy Under-21's squad to play the Netherlands on Tuesday.

The Juve-owned Giovinco limped off in the latter stages of last week's Tuscan derby against Fiorentina, but his recovery has been slower than expected and he will now have to sit out the friendly test in Ferrara, while Galloppa picked up a knock during his clubs 3-0 victory over Roma yesterday.

Pierluigi Casiraghi has replaced the duo with Empoli's Ignazio Abate and Avellino's Gabriele Paonessa.

The Azzurrini players will be hoping to impress Casiraghi ahead of August's Olympics football tournament in Beijing.
