Francesco Totti scored both goals in the 2-0 defeat of Sampdoria to take Roma to within four points of the Serie A summit. Genoa had earlier edged their encounter with Parma 1-0.
ROMA 2-0 SAMPDORIA
Roma were missing a number of first-team regulars with Rodrigo Taddei and Alberto Aquilani out injured and Philippe Mexes suspended but Totti, himself looking for match fitness having only recently returned from a foot complaint, revived the Giallorossi's Scudetto aspirations with a penalty after 17 minutes, awarded for a foul on Matteo Ferrari by Stefano Lucchini, which he cheekily chipped in. Samp, down to 10-men following the sending-off of Sergio Volpi, almost equalised three minutes from time when Andrea Caracciolo's volley was superbly repelled by Doni but Totti sealed the match from close range with his 160th Serie A goal in the final minute.
GENOA 1-0 PARMA
Genoa ended their nine-game search for a win thanks to a narrow 1-0 victory over Parma at the Stadio Luigi Ferraris. A Marco Borriello penalty two minutes before the interval was enough for Genoa to keep all three points for the first time since October 7, when they defeated Cagliari at home. It also lifted them above their opponents to eleventh in the table and a more comfortable position heading into the two-week Christmas break.
