Calcio plans after-match gesture

Serie A and B sides are set to follow Fiorentina and Inter’s lead and applaud each other off the pitch after games in the New Year.

Fiorentina won plaudits for their decision to create a rugby-style tunnel and clap their Inter counterparts off the field after Sunday’s defeat at the Stadio Artemio Franchi.

The gesture has been well received across the nation and it has been suggested as an initiative to calm tensions at games in 2008.

Lega Calcio President Antonio Matarrese is pressing for the ceremony to be observed at all Serie A and Cadetti games after the Christmas break.

Already nicknamed the "third half," the edict will take effect in January and the football officials will decide on details of the procedure at its next meeting on December 13.

A similar initiative was put in place to mark FIFA Fair Play week, but this could be a long-term scheme.
