Serie B Week 13: Weekend Preview

The winter tends to sort the men from the boys in Serie B, but at the moment some precocious minnows are leading the way.

Sadly, Lecce’s trip to Cesena has been postponed due to the tragic death of Giallorossi staff member Antonio De Giorgi. The 41-year-old was struck by lightning during a training session as a storm raged in Puglia. Salentini boss Giuseppe Papadopulo had a narrow escape when he was also hit but unharmed. The game against Serie B’s whipping boys hasn’t been rescheduled yet.

Albinoleffe are the new leaders and the tiny Bergamo side have every chance of extending their advantage as they host a dire Triestina side. The Alabardati are almost entirely dependent on striking prodigy Pablo Granoche and are making a mockery of their 30,000-seater stadium with their shoddy displays. In fact, the bookmakers are so unimpressed by the Giuliani that they list them as 6/1 to pick up a win.

Leffe stunned Chievo at the Stadio Bentegodi on Tuesday and it seems that their bubble may not burst. If the Seriani can keep picking up the expected points like these, they could be up there come Christmas.

Another miracle side Pisa are on their way to Vicenza. The Nerazzurri are bringing new life to the Cadetti and every game seems to be a classic. After a 3-3 draw with Modena on Tuesday they will look to go one better against underachieving opponents. The Berici have been tame this term, but they shocked Messina 2-0 in Sicily in midweek and could be starting their overdue climb into the 10th spot that has their name written all over it.

Chievo have the chance to extend Messina’s crisis, but they will have to exorcise some demons of their own after a home reverse at the hands of Albinoleffe.

Brescia’s defeat against Spezia was stunning and they will have plenty of time to think about it as they travel down to Bari. The Galletti have been hospitable hosts in recent seasons, but they are playing for boss Giuseppe Materazzi’s job and could finally show some spirit.
