UC Group Stage: Matchday 1 Review

Fiorentina were hit by a last-gasp Villarreal equaliser after a spirited performance in the opening Group C UEFA Cup game in the Estadio El Madrigal.

Villarreal 1-1 Fiorentina
Group C, Matchday 1

Both of these sides have begun their domestic season well but it was the team third in Serie A who began the game in the more lively fashion. Within ten minutes Diego Lopez had been forced to save superbly from both Mutu and Fabio Liverani while Vieri volleyed wide. Villarreal, second in the Primera Division, responded and Jon Dahl Tomasson's far-post header made Sebastien Frey punch away.

Veteran striker Christian Vieri had put the Viola ahead three minutes into the second period when finishing clinically following Adrian Mutu's lay-off. Mutu then thought he had made it 2-0 after a cross-shot went in at the far post, but his effort was ruled out for offside.

But Villarreal salvaged a point with two minutes remaining when Capdevila glanced home former Parma striker Giuseppe Rossi's free-kick to snatch a point.

Elfsborg 1-1 AEK Athens
Group C, Matchday 1
Elfsborg surrendered a first-half lead against AEK before hitting the woodwork twice in the final half-hour.

The hosts made the breakthrough after 15 minutes when positive play from Daniel Alexandersson allowed Daniel Moback to head home. But AEK were level four minutes into the second half when Harilaos Pappas found the top corner with a shot from close range. On the hour mark, Moback struck the post and 10 minutes later Alexandersson hit the bar as Elfsborg pressed for a winner.
