Serie C Week 4: Verona hit rock bottom

Former giants Verona have hit a new low after a defeat at early leaders Sassuolo left them propping up the Serie C1/A table.

The Gialloblu are still one of Italy’s most passionately supported sides despite a spectacular fall from grace that has seen the 1984-85 Scudetto winners slide into the third tier. Hopes that the Mastini would bounce straight back from calcio’s underbelly are fading fast as Franco Colomba’s men are yet to secure a win in their new habitat.

Emilia-Romagna side Sassuolo overcame their illustrious opponents at the tiny Stadio Enzo Ricci despite Verona taking an early lead when summer signing Giovanni Orfei rose to head home a Leandro Greco free-kick. Matteo Magnarelli equalised with an angled drive after a blocked free-kick and Marco Piccioni’s third goal in as many games came courtesy of a header from a Stefanio Pagani cross to secure win number four for Sassuolo.

It was a tough weekend for Venezia as they were held 1-1 by newly-promoted Lombardy outfit Lecco. In fact the Lagunari needed a penalty from Marco Romondini to level the game after trailing in the second half.

Favourites Cremonese were surprisingly beaten by Pro Patria, who were last in Serie A in 1956. A Guerrino Gasparello goal in the third minute was enough to halt Emiliano Mondonico’s excellent start with the Grigiorossi.

Newly-relegated Arezzo got back to winning ways against Pistoiese – Marcello Lippi’s old club – thanks to recent recruit Albanian international Florian Myrtaj.

Crotone fought out a tense stalemate with Salernitana, while Pescara routed Marche underachievers Sambenedettese 4-1.

Francesco Di Gennaro remains the striking star of Serie C, but his fifth goal of the season for Gallipoli against Taranto wasn’t enough to prevent a 2-1 defeat for a side chasing a fourth consecutive promotion.
