Serie C Week 2: Mondo vanquishes Verona

Verona’s nightmare start to life in Serie C continues after they slumped to a 1-0 defeat at Cremonese’s Stadio Zini.

The 1985 Scudetto winners lost to Cittadella last week and a goal from ex-Mantova striker Gabriele Graziani after a Gilerto Zanoletti cross was enough to double the Mastini’s misery.

Cremonese are emerging as one of the strong favourites to return to Serie B under the guidance of ex-Albinoleffe boss Emiliano Mondonico, an expert in building quality a side on a tight budget.

Venezia bounced back from an opening-day defeat which saw the dismissal of ex-Juventus boss Giancarlo Corradini as they saw off Pro Sesto 2-0. Fabrizio Romondini and Marco Veronese did the damage for a Lagunari side at least looking to reach the play-offs this term.

Newly-relegated Arezzo stole a late winner at Juve Stabia courtesy of Eugenio Togni and Crotone eased to a 3-1 win over Pistoiese.

It was a disappointing afternoon for expectant Perugia – Intertoto Cup winners in 2003 – as they shipped a late winner to minnows Lanciano.

"The refereeing decisions seemed unjust," bellowed coach Antonello Cuccureddu. "In the first half we were called offside dubiously several times, then they scored from a corner after their lad was at least three metres offside."
