SuperCoppa Italia 2007-08: Inter 0-1 Roma
A late Daniele De Rossi spot-kick allowed Coppa Italia holders Roma to lift the Italian Super Cup at the expense of champions Inter at the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza.
The Azzurri midfielder held his nerve from the penalty spot twelve minutes from time after Roma captain Francesco Totti was fouled by Nicolas Burdisso. The Giallorossi had lost 4-3 to the Nerazzurri in this fixture a year ago but made amends with tonight's triumph in the traditional curtain-raiser to the new Serie A season, which gets under way next weekend.
Roma dominated the first half with new signing Ludovic Giuly's early right-foot volley from De Rossi's cross the pick of their chances. Inter twice went close to breaking the deadlock through Zlatan Ibrahimovic in the five minutes before the interval. The Sweden striker fired just wide with a low shot before again missing the target from just outside the penalty area after a good pass by Dejan Stankovic.
Both sides had good opportunities to score in the early stages of the second half. Roma goalkeeper Doni saved David Suazo's low shot from close range while Giuly shot over the bar with just Julio Cesar to beat after a wonderful pass by Totti. Suazo again went close moments later but the Honduras striker failed to angle his header when well-placed to score, allowing Doni to make a comfortable save. Inter paid for their profligacy as Roma finally found the breakthrough that ensured the first trophy of the season would be going back to the capital.
