UEFA Intertoto Cup, Third Round 1st Leg
CHERNO MORE 0-1 SAMPDORIA
Sampdoria are within sight of a UEFA Cup second qualifying round place after a 1-0 win in their Intertoto Cup third round tie at PFC Cherno More.
Samp seemed content to soak up the pressure early on and hit their hosts on the break in Bourgas. Stefano Lucchini scored the decisive goal for the Serie A side two minutes before the half-time break. Sergio Volpi whipped in a free kick fell for Lucchini and his low, diagonal volley took a cruel deflection off Daniel Dimov's leg to take it into the net.
The match was halted twice after the Bulgarian fans threw paper and then some stadium seats on to the pitch in the sweltering heat.
Cherno More were livelier in the second half and had a penalty appeal for handball, while Luca Castellazzi was called into a stunning save on Fabiano Laurentino’s header. Caracciolo combined with Claudio Bellucci on the counter, but the former Bologna striker couldn’t get the finish on target even after going past the ‘keeper.
The Bulgarian outfit now face an uphill task in next Saturday's second leg in Genoa.
