Serie B Play-out: Spezia send down Verona

Serie B: Play-out Final, Second Leg
Thursday 21 June 2007
Verona 0-0 Spezia [AGG: 1-2] (Stadio Bentegodi, Verona)

Verona will play in Serie C next season after failing to beat Spezia in the relegation play-out this evening.

Having lost the first leg of their relegation crunch tie 2-1, the Gialloblu struggled to break down their opponents which has brought their 64-year stay in the top two Divisions to an end.

Verona enjoyed spells of long possession in the first half but Spezia ‘keeper Santoni was in fine form for the minnows.

On two minutes the No 1 kept out a Da Silva header with a great save to his right and he ended the opening period by fantastically denying Nieto with the help of the bar.

With the threat of relegation firmly in the air, the 1985 Italian champions pushed forward but without any success.

Spezia survive for another campaign in the Second Division, while it is well and truly crisis time at the Bentegodi.

Hellas become the second side from the city to fall this season after Chievo dropped out of the top flight earlier this month.
