Empoli robbed of a goal

Referees' Association Chief Luigi Agnolin watches the goal-line technology being tested in Udine.

Empoli were undoubtedly the biggest losers of Round 14 when they were robbed of a goal in their match against Torino at the Stadio Olimpico on Sunday 3 December 2006.

On the hour mark with the score at 0-0, Empoli's Francesco Marianini saw his header cleared ‘off the line’ by Torino's Simone Barone.

The goal was not awarded by referee Domenico Celi or his assistants even though television replays showed that the ball was clearly over the line. While on the same day goal-line technology was being tested out in Udine - where no such incidents took place - it was despretely needed in Turin.

To make matters worse, Empoli went on to lose the match with Gianluca Comotto grabbing the only goal with just two minutes remaining on the clock - a result which brought an end to their seven match unbeaten run.
