CL: Matchday 6

Tuesday 5 December
Group B - Matchday 6
A last-minute strike from Patrick Vieira secured a point for visitors Inter but Bayern Munich's frustration was tempered by the knowledge that a draw still saw them top Group B ahead of their opponents. Roy Makaay spurned a host of chances before burying a second-half effort that had looked to condemn a lethargic-looking Inter to a rare defeat. Both teams will go into the hat for the next round but a share of the points was flattering for the Serie A outfit who had rarely made any attacking inroads.

Early goals from Roman Pavlyuchenko and Maxym Kalynychenko set Spartak Moscow on their way to victory over Sporting Lisbon and earned the Russians a place in the UEFA Cup at the expense of their hosts.

Group D - Matchday 6
Christian Panucci's first-half goal earned Roma a narrow victory against an under-strength Valencia and ensured his side a place in the knockout stages of the Champions League. The veteran defender was the hero for the hosts with his 13th-minute header confirming that his team would finish second in Group D behind the Spaniards.

In the other game, Shakhtar Donetsk claimed a UEFA Cup berth at the expense of Olympiacos after holding the Greeks at the Georgios Karaiskakis stadium in Athens to secure third place. Brazilian midfielder Matuzalem headed the Ukrainians in front in the first half of this tightly fought match with both sides playing for their future in European competition before Nery Alberto Castillo levelled for the hosts with an emphatic strike just after half-time.

Other Results - Matchday 6
Group A: Chelsea 2-0 Levski Sofia, Barcelona 2-0 Werder Bremen.
Group C: Galatasaray 3-2 Liverpool, PSV Eindhoven 1-3 Bordeaux.

Wednesday 7 December
Group H - Matchday 6
An inspired Lille comfortably beat AC Milan to finish second in Group H behind the Italians and reach the knock-out stages of the Champions League for the first time in their history. Peter Odemwingie struck in the eighth minute to put the French side on their way before Kader Keita doubled the lead shortly after the hour mark. Claude Puel's French side were made to sweat until the last minute as AEK Athens almost spoiled the party for them in the other group game. However, the Greeks drew 2-2 at Anderlecht to give Lille a place in the last 16.

AEK Athens' Champions League dream is over but their European season will continue with a place in the UEFA after Lorenzo Serra Ferrer's team produced a battling display to come from two goals down to draw with Group H basement boys Anderlecht in a thrilling encounter in Brussels. Goals from Anthony Vanden Borre and Nicolas Frutos had put Anderlecht firmly in control at the Constant Vanden Stock Stadium until the 75th minute, when AEK substitute Vasilios Lakis headed home to claw the Greeks back into contention. Italian defender Bruno Cirillo then levelled the scores five minutes later with a stunning volley but it wasn't enough for AEK who needed a win.
