UEFA Cup: Palermo stuffed in Turkey; Parma win

Thursday 23 November
Group D: Parma 2-1 Heerenveen
Parma are now the only side in Group D with a 100 percent record as they came from behind to beat Heerenveen. The Dutch outfit made a bright start in Italy as Danijel Pranjic fired Heerenveen ahead on 21 minutes. The goal served to sting Parma into action as Igor Budan levelled the scores on 24 minutes with a looping header. And Budan took the game beyond Heerenveen when netting the winner for Parma on 73 minutes, also with his head. Parma can secure their spot in the Last 32 if they get at least a draw at Lens on November 29.

Group H: Fenerbahce 3-0 Palermo
Fenerbahce made home advantage count as they ran out 3-0 winners over Palermo in Group H of the UEFA Cup on Thursday. The Turkish side were beaten by Newcastle United in their first game, but they bounced back in Istanbul. Skilful Ghana midfielder Stephen Appiah set the Turks on their way with the opening goal on 20 minutes, finishing with aplomb after linking up with Mateja Kezman. Palermo battled well, but their defence was breached again just past the hour when Diego Lugano found the target from close range. Local hero Tuncay Sanli made the points safe when adding a third on 82 minutes, as Fener revived their hopes of qualifying from Group H. Palermo need to pick up a win in their final game against Celta Vigo in Sicily on December 13 to qualify for the next round.
