Golden Ball nominees revealed

Seven members of Italy’s World Cup winning squad are included in the shortlist of 50 players who will compete for the 2006 Golden Ball award.

Gianluigi Buffon, Fabio Cannavaro, Gennaro Gattuso, Fabio Grosso, Andrea Pirlo, Luca Toni and Gianluca Zambrotta are on the list released by France Football magazine, while Zinedine Zindane is one of the 11 French candidates.

Marco Materazzi was not on the list, just as in 2006 FIFA World Player nominations last week.

This is the 51st year of the award, also known as European Footballer of the Year, and Ronaldinho’s successor will be voted by a jury of three journalists per European country. The award will be assigned on December 18.
